By the end of 2019, the new SpareBank 1 SR-Bank headquarters at Finansparken Bjergsted in Stavanger, Norway, will be ready. It is a truly unique project as one of Europe’s largest commercial examples of timber-frame architecture. The design includes an impressive atrium with curved wooden stairways enhanced by ourglass railings.

Norwegian architectural firms Helen & Hard and SAAHA were engaged to create the design for the Finansparken Bjergsted premises. In the end, they decided to frame Stavanger’s latest structure entirely in wood. In fact, the entire load-bearing structure was skilfully constructed from this traditional material. No bolts, screws or nails were used in any of the skilfully hewn Norwegian timber joints. In combination with ceiling-high glass façades and transparent partition walls, this creates a spacious, open and classically nostalgic Scandinavian feel in a modern 21st century composition.

In the grand atrium, arched wooden stairways provide a truly thought-provoking artistic design. To properly ensure the marriage of performance and aesthetic consistency, the architects chose to line the stairs with glass railings. The design called for 1200 feet of our glass balustrade and 400 feet of the Glass system on the stairs and adjacent galleries. Top-mounted base shoes were specified, 160 feet of which required custom 2D and 3D bends.
